Everyone hates cockroaches! They are dirty and well known for their disease spreading capacity. They hide in drawers where food utensils are stored, get into open packaging and leave their faeces on and around the things we eat. It’s embarrassing to have cockroaches running around the place too because although not necessarily the case, it gives the impression that one’s home is unclean. ‘If it’s not necessarily about cleanliness then where do they come from?’ and how to get rid of cockroaches, may be the questions on your lips. Often they can be brought into the home hiding in boxes of groceries or other matter. In the summer months they may simply fly through an open door or window. All you need is a male and a female to find their way into your home and in a neat little hiding spot they will begin work on establishing a colony to live alongside you. The females carry many eggs at once and have short gestation periods and so it doesn’t take long for them to create a problem sized population. Species Identification The first thing we need to find out when dealing with a cockroach problem is – what species is the cockroach? This is crucial as the different species will require different types of product responses and these products will need to be applied in different locations due to the differing harbourages of the species. The usual cockroaches we see on the Brisbane are called ‘American’ or ‘Australian’ cockroaches. These are relatively simple to deal with. A perimeter treatment with a professional Brisbane Pest Control company’s standard product and the application of cockroach gels will sort these unwanted guests out quickly. (Cockroach gels are a product that is eaten by a cockroach and then passed on to feed other cockroaches thus wiping out entire populations by transfer effect rather than the slower process of waiting for every cockroach to individually contact sprayed chemicals). The cockroach you really don’t want to get at your place is the German cockroach. These cockroaches are reddish brown in color and are much smaller than the Australian or American species usually around centimeter long when fully grown. The baby or ‘nymph’ German cockroaches are often mistaken for being a second problem as they look like small black bugs only a few millimeters long. These cockroaches are more difficult to treat because they get inside appliances such as microwave ovens, telephones, fridge doors and especially inside the frame of your dishwasher. They are also prolific breeders carrying forty eggs at a time and having a much shorter gestation period than other species. These cockroaches if left too long will require multiple treatments to eliminate.
